Whitby Abbey
Whitby Abbey is the town's most famous attraction.
The abbey is forever associated with St Hilda, the founding abbess of the first monastery at Whitby in the 7th century. It was here that Caedmon the cowherd was inspire to write poetry to the glory of God; the monastery at Whitby was also extremely influential in spreading Christianity throughout the land. The present building dates from the thirteenth century and is in the Early English Gothic style. The Abbey, like the church of St Mary, can only be reahced via the famous 199 steps.
